THE STRUCTURE OF T H E COLLODION MEMBRANE AND ITS ELECTRICAL BEHAVIOR IX. WATER UPTAKE AND SWELLING OF COLLODION MEMBRANES IN AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS OF ORGANIC ELECTROLYTES AND NON-ELECTROLYTES BY KARL SOLLNER Am)

چکیده
In a recent publication Carr and Sollner 1 have reported on the water uptake and the swelling of collodion membranes in water and solutions of strong inorganic electrolytes. They determined the weight and volume changes of collodion membranes when placed in water and when transferred from water to solutions of strong electrolytes. I t was found that dried collodion membranes swell reversibly to an appreciable extent when placed in water, the swelling varying from 5 to 11 per cent depending on the brand of collodion. The water uptake as determined by the weight increase is larger than could be accounted for by the volume increase, swelling accounting for only 60 to 70 per cent of the water taken up by the membranes. When the "water-wetted dried" collodion membranes were transferred from water to solutions of various strong electrolytes, there was no detectable change in volume. Similarly, when "porous" membranes were transferred from water to solutions of strong electrolytes, there was no significant volume change. Without giving further details, Carr and Sollner I stated that the problem of water uptake and swelling of collodion membranes is more complex in aqueous solutions of many organic compounds. This is of interest in view of the fact that the permeability of collodion membranes to various organic substances in aqueous solutions was found by several investigators to be anomalously high. Michaelis and Fujita 2 reported that strychnine, quinine, and other alkaloid cations penetrate dried collodion membranes with approximately the same ease as do sodium ions, which undoubtedly are much smaller. Collander, s measuring the relative permeability of about thirty organic nonelectrolytes and weakly dissociated compounds, mostly acids, found that with a few exceptions the permeability decreased regularly with increasing molecular

Ammonium Bicarbonate Transport in Anion Exchange Membranes for Salinity Gradient Energy
Many salinity gradient energy technologies such as reverse electrodialysis (RED) rely on highly selective anion transport through polymeric anion exchange membranes. While there is considerable interest in using thermolytic solutions such as ammonium bicarbonate (AmB) in RED processes for closed-loop conversion of heat energy to electricity, little is known about membrane performance in this el...

The majority of mammalian cells demonstrate regulatory volume decrease (RVD) following swelling caused by hyposmotic exposure. A critical signal initiating RVD is activation of nucleotide receptors by ATP. Elevated extracellular ATP in response to cytotoxic cell swelling during pathological conditions also may initiate loss of taurine and other intracellular osmolytes via anion channels. This s...

SUMMARY: Smooth neuronal functioning requires an uninterrupted supply of energy that is provided by glucose under normal physiologic conditions. Significant variations in plasma glucose levels, be it hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia, can present with myriad clinical manifestations and may mimic stroke. At times, the diagnosis is either not apparent or not clinically suspected. Imaging can suggest ...
متن کاملPerspectives in Pharmacology Mechanisms of Cadmium-Induced Proximal Tubule Injury: New Insights with Implications for Biomonitoring and Therapeutic Interventions
Cadmium is an important industrial agent and environmental pollutant that is a major cause of kidney disease. With chronic exposure, cadmium accumulates in the epithelial cells of the proximal tubule, resulting in a generalized reabsorptive dysfunction characterized by polyuria and low-molecular-weight proteinuria. The traditional view has been that as cadmium accumulates in proximal tubule cel...
متن کاملGains from diversification on convex combinations: A majorization and stochastic dominance approach
By incorporating both majorization theory and stochastic dominance theory, this paper presents a general theory and a unifying framework for determining the diversification preferences of risk-averse investors and conditions under which they would unanimously judge a particular asset to be superior. In particular, we develop a theory for comparing the preferences of different convex combination...
